Ong Beng Seng Pleads Guilty To Abetting The Obstruction Of Justice
4 August 2025
On 4 August 2025, Ong Beng Seng (“Ong”) pleaded guilty to one charge of abetting the obstruction of justice under Section 204A(a) read with Section 109 of the Penal Code. Another charge under Section 165 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code was taken into consideration for sentencing.
In its sentencing submissions, the Prosecution submitted that a custodial sentence of eight weeks’ imprisonment would ordinarily have been appropriate for the charge involved. The Defence accepted that a custodial sentence would ordinarily have been appropriate, but urged the Court to exercise judicial mercy and impose a fine on the basis of Ong’s severe medical conditions.
According to medical reports tendered in Court, Ong, who is 79 years old, suffers from advanced multiple myeloma. This is an incurable form of cancer which has damaged his skeletal system and compromised his immune system, making him vulnerable to life-threatening infections. Ong also suffers from other complications which further exacerbate his risk of infection and place him at risk of gangrene.
After carefully considering the medical evidence before the Court, the Prosecution accepted that there was basis for the Court to consider the exercise of judicial mercy, and did not object to the imposition of a fine on that basis.
Sentencing has been adjourned by the Court to 15 August 2025.
