Contempt of Court Proceedings Against Gopalan Nair

The proceedings against Gopalan Nair for contempt of court were heard on 12 November 2008 before District Judge Leslie Chew in the Subordinate Courts. At the hearing of the matter, Gopalan Nair apologised for the offending statements made by him and undertook not to make similar statements again. Gopalan Nair also undertook to remove the posts from his blog amounting to contempt of court. He was admonished by the court and ordered to pay legal costs.

AG's application for an order of committal for contempt of court against Dow Jones Publishing Company (Asia), Inc, the proprietor and publisher of The Wall Street Journal Asia was heard on 4 November 2008 before the Honourable Justice Tay Yong Kwang. Justice Tay has reserved his judgment.

Contempt Proceedings Against 3 Individuals – Kangaroo T-shirt case

The AG has applied to the High Court for contempt proceedings to be instituted against three individuals for wearing T-shirts imprinted with a picture of a kangaroo dressed in a judge’s gown in the vicinity of the New Supreme Court Building on certain dates in May 2008. At the hearing of the matter today, the three individuals applied for an adjournment as they required additional time to prepare their cases.

Contempt Proceedings Against 3 Individuals – Kangaroo T-shirt case

The AG has applied to the High Court for contempt proceedings to be instituted against 3 individuals for wearing T-shirts imprinted with a picture of a kangaroo dressed in a judge’s gown in the vicinity of the New Supreme Court Building on certain dates in May 2008, when hearing for the assessment of damages payable by Chee Soon Juan, Chee Siok Chin and the Singapore Democratic Party in respect of the defamation action instituted against them by the Minister Mentor and the Prime Minister was ongoing.

Public Prosecutor v. Lee Thian Soon & ors (PS 001504/08 & ors) : Prosecution's Address on Sentence
In a case involving a breach of a director's duty of reasonable diligence, the Court sentenced 5 directors of Chuan Soon Huat Industrial Group Ltd on 6 October 2008 as follows:
(1) the Executive Directors (Lee Thian Soon, Lee Siew Hoe & Lim Khiang Soon) - Fine $5,000 in default 5 weeks imprisonment and disqualified from acting as a director for 5 years, and
(2) the Independent Directors (Peter Moe & Sng Keng Ling) - Fine $5,000 in default 5 weeks imprisonment and disqualified from acting as a director for 2 years.

Justice, Compassion and Prosecutorial Discretion : Tang Wee Sung

Public Prosecutor v. Gopalan Nair : Prosecution's Address on Sentence
The case against blogger and former Singapore lawyer Gopalan Nair for verbally abusing police officers has concluded, after an 18-day trial, with his conviction. Gopalan Nair was sentenced to fines totaling $3,000.

Public Prosecutor v. Tang Wee Sung : Judgment
In the first case in Singapore involving the illegal purchase of a human organ (kidney), the Court sentenced Tang Wee Sung on 3 September 2008 as follows:
(1) 1st charge under the Human Organ Transplant Act - Fine $7,000 in default 7 weeks' imprisonment
(2) 2nd charge under the Oaths and Declarations Act - 1 day imprisonment and fine $10,000 in default 10 weeks' imprisonment
